The Program Year
From September through May, we run a full program generally consisting of one activity per week, including a monthly meeting that the whole Pack attends with their families. During June, July, and August, we have a more informal schedule consisting of one or two activities per month. The Scouts are encouraged to attend three summer activities in order to achieve the individual Summertime Award Pin.
When Can a Boy Join Cub Scouts
Boys are welcome to join the Pack at any time during the year. Boys currently in kindergarten can join the Pack at the end of the school year (on June 1), which will allow them to attend Cub Scout Day Camp and also participate in summer activities and earn the Summertime Award Pin.
The Organizational Structure of Cub Scouts
Our Pack consists of boys ranging from 1st to 5th grade. The pack is divided into five ranks (Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, Webelos I, and Webelos II), corresponding to each grade level. Learn more about the Cub Scout Ranks. Each rank has one or more dens, which is a small group of 5-8 boys in the same rank who act as a unit and work together to achieve their badge requirements.
About Badges
Every new Cub Scout begins the program by earning the Bobcat badge, regardless of which rank they start at. The Bobcat consists of a few basic requirements which serve to introduce the goals and traditions of the program to the child. After acheiving the Bobcat, the Scout moves on to working on their badge that corresponds to their current rank. At each rank, there are specific requirements that a boy must achieve in order to earn his badge. For example, a first grade boy would be in a Tiger Cub den, and would be working through the year to achieve his Tiger Cub badge. Each rank has a separate Cub Scout handbook, which explains all of the badge requirements in detail. Most boys achieve their rank by February or March, and then spend the remainder of the program year working on electives. 4th and 5th graders are called "Webelos", and are working for two years toward earning their Arrow of Light.
How Are Parents Involved
Parental involvement is an integral part of the Cub Scout program. At the Tiger Cub (first grade) level, each child must be accompanied by a parent at all den meetings, pack meetings, and other activities. Parents at the Tiger Cub level operate under a "shared leadership" approach, where parents take turns planning meeting activities. At the Bear, Wolf, and Webelos levels, dens are run by a Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader, and parents do not need to attend den meetings (though we ask you to walk your child into the meeting to make sure there are two adults at the meeting). Parents are asked to attend the monthly Pack Meeting, to share in the excitement of their boys earning achievements, watch the skits or activities that the children have prepared, learn about important announcements, and share in the excitement that the program has to offer. There are a number of ways that parents can help lead the program, at either the den level (e.g. being a Den Leader) or the Pack level (e.g. event coordinators, Assistant Cubmaster, etc). All of the leaders of the Pack make up the Pack Committee, which meets once a month to discuss Pack affairs, plan the Pack meeting, and plan upcoming activities.
How Much Does It Cost to Join?
Our annual Pack dues are $85 per year. Dues are payable in September of each year. Your dues cover all registration fees, all badges and awards that your child earns, costs we must pay to the Boy Scouts of America, and a subscription to Boys Life Magazine. Additionally, dens may set their own weekly dues (usually $2/week) to cover den actvities (e.g. project materials). Each boy must also purchase a rank-specific uniform and handbook.
How Do I Join?
We generally have an open house in June and in September/October, during which prospective Scouts are invited to meet with the Pack leaders, learn more about the program, and fill out the paperwork to join the program. Signup is not limited to these open houses, however. Boys are welcome to join the program at any time through the year. If you are interested in joining outside of our open houses, please contact our Cubmaster. We'd be happy to have you and your child visit one of our Pack meetings and learn more about the program! |
