Happy Birthday BSA!

posted Feb 8, 2010 12:04 PM by John Pattison   [ updated Feb 8, 2010 12:08 PM ]

A single act of kindness can make a difference... In 1909, publisher W.D. Boyce was in London and lost in the fog when a young Scout helped him find his way. The boy refused any money, saying he was simply doing a good turn. This act of kindness led to Boyce founding the Boy Scouts of America 100 years ago today. In these 100 years, more than 110 million Americans have been members of the organization.  So congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America for 100 fantastic years, and best wishes for the next 100!

Yesterday, Pack 9 joined with Troop 9 to celebrate the birthday of Scouting while also showing respect for our charter organization (Greendale People's Church) at Scout Sunday.  Many thanks to the boys and their families who were able to attend!

Today, some of the boys of Pack 9 helped mark the occasion by wearing their uniforms to school today.  The den 3 Tiger Cubs at Worcester Arts Magnet School even got recognized on the morning announcements.

We'll wrap up our month of celebration at our Blue and Gold Banquet on February 26.  It is an exciting time to be involved in Cub Scouts!

Caroling at Dodge Park Rest Home

Thank you to all of the Scouts and families who joined us on December 30 for caroling at Dodge Park Rest Home.  We arrived just as the residents were having dessert -- perfect timing for some holiday musical entertainment.  Our repertoire included Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells, Let It Snow, and Frosty the Snowman.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the Cub Scouts to follow the uphold the Law of the Pack by giving goodwill.

December 2009 Pack Meeting

posted Dec 21, 2009 6:01 AM by John Pattison

We had a fantastic Pack Meeting on December 18, 2009.

Our hot dog dinner had GREAT turnout.  Thanks to everyone who was able to make it.  We sold out of hot dogs, and will definitely plan for more next time.

The highlight of the evening was our Bobcat ceremony, where TEN of our boys become official Cub Scouts -- 5 Tigers, 1 Wolf, 1 Bear, and 3 Webelos.  The boys enjoyed wearing face paint in the Cub Scout colors -- blue and gold.

We also had a fun Norman Rockwell activity, where the kids and parents broke into groups, each having one Rockwell picture to do with Scouting, talked about what story the picture tells, and then showed each picture to the Pack.

Other activities included an opening ceremony by the Tiger Cub and Wolf dens, a Santa audience-participation story, distribution of the Pinewood Derby cars (complete with wrapping paper), a closing holiday cheer, and a closing flag ceremony by the Bears.

After the meeting, a group of people stuck around to make cards for wounded soldiers, which we sent this morning to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  We had 18 great cards in total -- a great way to spread Cub Scout goodwill.

Thank you to our Cub Scouts and our Scouters for making this meeting possible.

Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in coming to the Worcester Sharks Scout Night game on December 6.  We have 3 Scouts, 5 adults, 1 prospective Scout, and 1 younger sibling planning to attend.  We are looking forward to sharing Heroes Night together!

To anyone who wasn't able to make it this time, there will be two other Worcester Sharks Scout Nights on January 16, 2010 and March 20, 2010.  If anyone is interested in either of those nights, please contact John Pattison.  Friends and family are welcome!  It's a great opportunity for children currently in kindergarten to enjoy an activity with the Cub Scouts, in anticipation of joining after finishing the school year.

Scouts learn about fire safety at November Pack Meeting

posted Nov 24, 2009 7:58 AM by John Pattison   [ updated Nov 24, 2009 8:11 AM ]

The Pack 9 Cub Scouts welcomed Lt. Annemarie Pickett from the Worcester Fire Department to their pack meeting on Wednesday, November 18, 2009.  Lt. Annie talked to the boys about fire safety, gave them a ruler to take home to measure off a 3-foot safety zone around hazards, and gave them a packet of additional work to do to continue learning about fire safety. Everyone had a great time with "find the fire safety hazards."  Even the adults learned something new -- such as being able to press "1" when you dial "911" to indicate that there is an emergency but you cannot speak.  Thank you to Lt. Annie for coming to our pack meeting and working with the Scouts on fire safety!

Bags are being handed out at den meetings this week for our annual "Scouting for Food" drive.  “Scouting for Food” is Scouting’s community stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work.
Collected food will be distributed by Pack 9's chartered organization -- Greendale People's Church.

Bags can be handed out anytime this week, and should be picked up on Sunday, November 15.  Please bring bags to the Pack Meeting on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30pm.

Thank you to the Scouts for their work to make this project a success, and thank you to all of those who donate.

Tiger Cubs visit Greendale fire station

posted Nov 5, 2009 9:06 AM by John Pattison

The Tiger Cubs had a great time yesterday visiting the Greendale fire station.  They got to climb in engines, watch an engine return from a call, learn all about the hoses, watch a fire fighter get dressed up in his gear, and talk about fire safety (don't hide from firemen! get out!).  Best of all, they wrapped up the evening by giving the fire fighters a great big CUB SCOUT SALUTE for being community heroes.
